What’s your best trick for closing your pool for the season?

I dread closing my pool for the season! Any tips for making it easier, especially when dealing with all the debris?
I totally get that, it can feel like a big job! To make closing your pool easier, start by cleaning it thoroughly before draining the water. Vacuum up any debris, brush the walls, and remove any large debris from the bottom and skimmer baskets. You can use a leaf blower or a net to help clear off the cover before you remove it, which makes the process less messy.

Also, if you're using a cover, make sure it’s properly secured and doesn’t collect water or debris on top. This will make it much easier to clean later. Adding a winterizing chemical kit can help keep things in check during the off-season and make opening easier next spring.

The key is breaking it into smaller steps so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Just take it one thing at a time!

Closing the pool has always been the part I least look forward to. What’s helped me over the years is getting ahead of the mess. A few days before I cover it, I take time to vacuum the bottom, skim the surface, and brush the walls. If I can, I trim back any trees or shrubs nearby to cut down on leaves dropping in. The cleaner the water is before closing, the better shape it’s in when I open it again.

Right before I shut everything down, I test the water and adjust the chlorine, pH, and alkalinity. Then I add a shock treatment and run the pump overnight to let it circulate. One thing that’s made a big difference is using a leaf net during that final week. I stretch it across the surface and pull it off every day or two, it keeps most of the leaves out and saves a ton of time before the cover goes on.

For the cover itself, I use a solid one that fits tight and doesn’t sag. I also place water bags around the edge to hold it in place. It’s not the most exciting job, but once it’s done, I know the pool will be easier to open next season. A little extra effort now saves me a lot of work in the spring.

Totally agree, if possible, try not to worry about everything at once. Start with the small stuff and take it slow—it’ll get done! But hey, if you're really dreading it, always find an easier way to make things work, right?

To close your pool, clean it by skimming, vacuuming, and brushing. Lower the water level, add winter chemicals like algaecide and shock, drain the equipment, and cover the pool securely. This will make opening easier next season!

Closing the pool doesn’t have to be stressful! My go-to method is to tackle it step by step: vacuum and brush the pool thoroughly, skim off all debris, and make sure the water chemistry is balanced with a good shock treatment and winterizing chemicals. I lower the water a bit if needed, drain any equipment, and then put the cover on tightly. Using a leaf net for the last week before covering helps a ton with all those falling leaves. Doing it methodically makes opening the pool next season way easier, and saves a lot of hassle!
