I stick to a pretty simple routine for both opening and closing, and it’s kept things running smoothly without surprises.
For opening:
I start by clearing off the cover so nothing drops into the water, then skim whatever managed to sneak in over winter. After that, I reconnect the pump, filter, and any heaters, and top up the water level if it’s low. Once everything’s hooked up, I let the system run for a few hours before testing the water. A good shock early on usually clears up any leftover winter dullness, and brushing the walls helps a lot more than people realize.
For closing:
I basically reverse the process, deep clean the pool, balance the water, and shock it before shutting things down. Then I lower the water level (depending on the pool), blow out and plug the lines so nothing freezes, add winter chemicals, and secure the cover tight so debris stays out.
It’s not complicated once you get into the rhythm, just a few careful steps that save you a ton of headaches later on.
