What’s the best thickness for an above ground pool liner?

I’m trying to figure out whether I should go with a 20 mil or 25 mil liner for my above ground pool. Some places say thicker is always better, but then others say it doesn’t matter as much if you take care of your water. I don’t want to overpay, but I also don’t want to replace the liner after just a couple seasons. What thickness did you go with, and has it held up well?

Hey, I went with a 20 mil liner since it's sturdy enough and doesn’t break the bank. So far, it’s held up pretty well even with frequent use. If you’re looking to avoid replacing the liner too often, I think going with a slightly thicker one is a smart choice. Hope that helps!

I just installed a 25 mil liner this season and honestly, I’m glad I spent the extra bit. I figured if I’m already putting in the work to set up the pool and maintain the water, I might as well go for something that’ll last longer. It feels more durable when you’re walking on it too, which gave me a little more peace of mind with kids jumping in and out. That said, if you’re good about keeping the water balanced, I think either thickness can work. Just depends on how long you want to stretch the lifespan before dealing with another liner swap.

We went with a 25 mil just to be safe. Figured the extra thickness might hold up better with the kids constantly jumping in and out. It’s been three seasons and still holding strong, no issues. Might’ve been fine with 20, but for the price difference, we felt better going thicker.

I did a 20 mil liner to save a bit, and it’s actually held up fine so far this is our second summer. We’re careful with the water chemistry and don’t let it sit dirty, so that probably helps. If your pool sees a lot of rough use, maybe go 25, but I don’t think 20 is a bad call if you stay on top of maintenance.

A 20 mil liner is typically sufficient for most pools and offers a good balance of cost and durability, lasting several seasons with proper care. A 25 mil liner is thicker and more durable, making it a better option if you're looking for extra protection against punctures or have more pool traffic, but it comes at a higher cost. If you maintain your water well, a 20 mil liner should be just fine, but if you want more longevity, the 25 mil could be worth the extra investment.
