What’s the best pool closing kit you’ve used that actually keeps the water clean and avoids algae growth when you reopen in spring?

Hey everyone, I’m closing my pool this season for the first time on my own. I’ve seen a lot of advice online about using different chemicals and kits, but I’d love to hear from people here. What’s the best pool closing kit you’ve used that actually keeps the water clean and avoids algae growth when you reopen in spring? Any tips are appreciated!

I had the same struggle last year and ended up using the AquaDoc Pool Closing Kit. It made the whole process much easier. The kit comes with the right balance of chemicals, so I didn’t have to figure out what to buy separately. When I opened my pool this spring, the water was clear and I didn’t have any issues with algae. Definitely recommend checking it out here: AquaDoc Pool Closing Kit.

+1 on the AquaDoc kit. I’ve tried DIY-ing it before with mixed results, but the kit really takes out the guesswork. The instructions are straightforward, and it even handled my bigger pool without a problem. For me, it was worth it because I didn’t have to shock the pool heavily when reopening

I’ve tried a couple of different closing kits over the years, and the one that’s worked best for me has been the Doheny’s kit. Nothing fancy about it, but it kept the water pretty clean over winter and I didn’t open to a green mess in spring. I still had to do the usual balancing when I reopened, but no algae bloom or heavy scrubbing, which was a relief.

One thing I learned the hard way: the kit helps, but it’s the prep that really makes the difference. I always shock the pool a day before closing, vacuum it thoroughly, clean the filter, and make sure the water level is right before putting the cover on. If any of those steps get rushed, even the best kit won’t save you from algae.

So yeah, a good kit matters, but the extra 30 minutes of prep is what really pays off when you open the pool again.

I’ve tested a few different kits over the years, and what ended up making the biggest difference wasn’t actually the brand as much as how well the kit handled the late-season water conditions. The one I’ve stuck with recently is the In The Swim kit, not because it’s flashy, but because it kept things stable through a pretty unpredictable winter. When I opened up in spring, the water wasn’t perfect, but it was clear enough that I didn’t have to fight off an algae bloom or do a massive cleanup.

What really helped was pairing the kit with a good clarifier before closing. Whenever my water starts looking a bit hazy at the end of the season, I throw in AquaDoc’s clarifier, it settles everything out nicely so you’re not sealing in cloudy water under the cover. That little step seems to make reopening way less painful.

So, for me, a decent kit + clean water going in has been the winning combo. Hope your first solo closing goes smoothly!
