Opening my pool this season was a nightmare! Anyone have tips to make the process smoother, especially for those stubborn leaves and debris?

I hear you! The leaves are the worst. What helped me was getting a good pool cover for the off-season. It made a huge difference in keeping the water clean when opening up.

Here are some simple, practical tips to make pool opening easier each year:

1. Clean the Cover Before Removing It
Before taking the winter cover off, use a leaf blower or a submersible pump to get rid of leaves and standing water. This keeps gunk from falling into the pool.

2. Inspect Equipment Early
Check the pump, filter, heater, and plumbing for cracks or wear before startup. It’s better to catch issues now than mid-season.

3. Top Off the Water

Fill the pool back to normal levels if it dropped over winter, your system needs enough water to prime the pump properly.

4. Start With a Shock
Once circulation is going, shock the water with chlorine to kill off any leftover algae or bacteria from winter.

5. Clean and Run the System
Vacuum debris, brush the walls, and run the pump continuously for 24–48 hours to clear up cloudy water fast.

6. Create a Simple Checklist
Have a go-to list every year, unplug return lines, reattach fittings, clean filters, etc. so you don’t forget the little stuff.

pening the pool can be a pain. One thing that’s helped me is using a pool cover during the off-season it cuts down on the debris. Before getting in, I usually blow off as much as I can with a leaf blower. For the stuff in the water, I use a skimmer net on a pole. It takes some time, but it works. After most of the debris is out, I usually shock the pool to help clear things up faster. Hopefully, this helps for next time!

Opening and closing the pool can really feel like its own little adventure. But once you know the routine, it actually becomes kind of fun, right? Maybe it could even turn into an annual tradition—cleaning and opening the pool with some excitement!

I’ve started treating my pool like it’s making veggie soup every batch of leaves and twigs I skim out feels like straining broth. Somehow framing it as ‘leaf pesto prep’ makes the job oddly satisfying and I never miss a spot! Anyone else have a fun snack-inspired twist on pool cleanup?
