Pump troubles has anyone else experience this?

So, I’ve noticed my pool pump has been making a buzzing sound lately, even after cleaning the filter and checking the pipes. Does anyone know what could be causing it or how to fix it?

I had the same issue a while back! It turned out that there was an airlock in the pipes. I had to release the air and check the valve to fix it. Give that a try!

Another thing to check is whether the pump is clogged with debris or if it's been overworked recently. Sometimes it's not just airlocks or the valve. If you haven't already, check the impeller and the motor, as they can wear out over time and make strange sounds. Also, make sure the pump is getting enough flow, as restricted water flow can cause it to sound off as well

I had the same issue last year, that annoying buzzing sound made me think the pump was on its last leg. Turned out it was the capacitor that had gone bad. The motor was trying to start but just didn’t have the kick it needed. Swapped it out and it fired right up.

If your pump is running but still buzzing, check if something’s vibrating loose. Mine once had a bolt that backed out just enough to cause a weird hum. Also worth checking inside the impeller housing, I’ve pulled out twigs and even a small rock that somehow made it in.

And don’t forget to check the power, I once had a weak connection in the breaker that messed with voltage and made the pump sound off.

Hopefully it’s nothing major, but it’s good to jump on it before it gets worse.

A buzzing sound from your pump could be a few different things. It might be an issue with the pump motor, like a loose part or worn-out bearings. Sometimes, air bubbles trapped in the system can also cause a buzzing sound, so double-check your air relief valve to make sure it’s not clogged or malfunctioning.

Another possibility is that the pump is struggling with low water flow, which could happen if there's debris still in the lines or if the impeller is partially clogged. If the noise persists after cleaning everything and checking the pipes, it might be time to check the motor or call a pro to take a look. It’s better to address it sooner before it causes more damage!

A buzzing sound from the pool pump could be due to a few things. It might be an issue with the motor bearings, which can wear out over time and cause noise. Another possibility is a loose part, like the pump’s impeller or motor casing, that’s vibrating. You could also check for any debris that might have gotten stuck in the pump, even after cleaning the filter. If cleaning and tightening everything don’t help, it might be worth having a professional inspect the motor, as it could need lubrication or replacement if the bearings are worn out.

Hey Sally,

I had a similar issue recently. One thing I found that sometimes gets overlooked is the pump basket and the shaft seal. Even if the filter looks clean, a partially clogged basket or a slightly worn seal can make the motor hum or buzz. Also, check that the pump isn’t air-locked, sometimes just loosening the pump lid slightly while it’s running can help release trapped air.

If all that looks fine, it could be the motor capacitor or bearings starting to fail. In my case, swapping out the capacitor fixed the buzzing instantly. Definitely try the easy fixes first, but if it persists, getting a technician to inspect the motor is the safest move, catching a motor issue early can save you from a full replacement later.

Also, as a side note, while I was at it, I treated my water with AquaDoc clarifier since the pump struggles can sometimes stir up fine particles, and it made the water crystal clear again in a few hours.
