Pool Opening and Closing Tips

One thing I always do when opening my pool is to check the filter and pump first sometimes debris or leaves build up during the off-season. I also make sure to give everything a good scrub before filling it up, especially the corners where algae likes to hide. What do you usually do for the first clean-up after the cover's been off for a while?

For me, the biggest tip is to take your time and not rush through it. I used to try to get it all done in one afternoon, and I’d always miss something important. Now I spread it out over a couple of days and double-check everything, especially connections and chemical levels.

Also, for closing, I always make sure the water is properly balanced before putting the cover on. Skipping that step once made opening way more of a headache the next spring. Lesson learned.

I’ve found that a good pool opening or closing really comes down to planning and consistency. When opening, I always start by checking all equipment, pump, filter, and skimmers, then remove debris and give the walls and floor a light scrub. Balancing the water chemistry right away makes a huge difference for keeping it clear and preventing algae.

For closing, I make sure to clean thoroughly, add the right winter chemicals, lower the water slightly if needed, and use a quality cover. I also like to run the pump for a few extra hours after adding chemicals so everything circulates well. Taking it step by step avoids surprises when it’s time to open again.
