Is it normal for my pool steps to feel slippery even after brushing?

Lately, the steps in my pool feel a bit slick, almost like there's a film on them, even though I brush regularly. Is this just algae starting to form or something else? Water chemistry seems fine. Curious if anyone else has run into this.

I’ve noticed that a few times in my pool, especially during warmer weeks. Even if the water looks fine and tests okay, that slick feeling on the steps usually ends up being the start of algae for me. It’s sneaky, sometimes you don’t see it, but you can feel it. I brush pretty regularly too, but it still showed up. I ended up doing a shock and tossed in a bit of algaecide, and that cleared it right up. Might be worth checking your chlorine levels later in the day too mine were fine in the morning but dropped more than I thought by the afternoon. Pools can be weird like that.

Yeah, I’ve felt that slick feeling on my pool steps before too. Even when the water looks fine and the numbers test okay, it can still be the early signs of algae. It starts as just a thin film that you can feel more than see.

I was brushing regularly too, but it kept coming back until I did a shock and cleaned the filter really well. Also made sure the chlorine stayed steady, especially during hot days. Since then, no more slimy steps.

Might be worth giving your pool a shock just to be safe. Better to catch it early before it gets worse.

From what I’ve seen, that slippery feeling usually means a thin layer of algae starting to form, even if it’s not visible yet. Keeping up with regular brushing and giving it a shock treatment now and then usually helps keep it safe and slip-free.

I used to notice the same thing! It’s frustrating when the steps feel slick, but you can’t see the algae yet. One trick I learned was running the pump for longer hours, even at night when the chlorine level can drop. I also started using a phosphate remover, which seemed to help stop the algae from coming back so quickly. Just something to try if it’s still an issue.

I’ve had that happen a few times, and for me it’s almost always the start of algae, even when the tests look normal. The steps seem to show it first because the water doesn’t move much there. A quick shock usually clears that slick layer, but I’d also give your filter a good rinse just to rule out any buildup slowing things down.

One thing that helped me a lot was keeping the water circulating a bit longer on hotter days. If the water ever looks slightly dull or you start seeing it get cloudy, I’ll toss in Aquadoc’s clarifier, honestly the only one that’s consistently worked for me. It tightens everything up fast.

Nothing major, just an early warning sign to stay ahead of.
