How Do I Effectively Control Algae in My Pool and Spa?

I’m having trouble keeping algae under control in my pool and spa. What are the best methods for preventing and treating algae growth? Are there specific chemicals, tools, or maintenance practices that work best for both pools and spas? How often should I treat the pool to prevent algae from reappearing, and what should I do if it keeps coming back?

One thing I found helpful is keeping the water circulation strong, especially in the pool and spa areas. Algae loves stagnant water, so keeping things flowing really helps. Also, I’ve been using an algaecide regularly, and it’s made a big difference. Just make sure to test and balance your water regularly so you don’t throw off the chemistry while you're treating for algae

Hey Mia! One trick I found helpful is adding a bit of algaecide every now and then, especially when the water's been sitting for a while. It doesn’t hurt to do a quick check on your filter too sometimes it gets clogged and slows down water circulation, which can promote algae growth. Regular cleaning really makes a difference too

Algae can be such a headache! I’ve dealt with it a few times, and what really helped me was staying on top of the basics. I make sure to test my water a couple of times a week, especially when it’s hot out. If chlorine drops too low, algae shows up fast.

I usually shock the pool if I see anything green or cloudy, then follow up with an algaecide. After that, I scrub the walls and vacuum everything, dead algae can settle on the bottom and come back if you don’t clean it out.

Running the filter daily for at least 8 hours helps a lot too. I also check for spots with poor circulation, behind ladders, steps, etc. That’s where algae likes to sneak in.

And, once I started cleaning my pool toys and covers more often, the algae stopped coming back as much. Little things add up.

Thank you all for the helpful advice! I really appreciate the tips on keeping water circulation strong and the regular use of algaecide. Testing and balancing the water chemistry regularly makes a lot of sense, and I’ll be sure to follow that. Cleaning pool toys and covers more often is something I hadn’t thought of, so that’s a great tip as well. Your experiences and suggestions have made managing algae seem a lot more manageable. Thanks again for sharing!

For me, aside from using algaecide, it’s all about making sure your water circulation is solid. Algae loves to form in places where water doesn’t move much. Regularly brushing the pool walls and keeping the chlorine and pH levels balanced also go a long way to prevent algae from coming back.

One thing I’ve found helpful is staying consistent with the small stuff, like brushing the pool walls and cleaning the filter often. I didn’t realize how much algae hides in those places, and it helped me get rid of algae much faster. Also, when the weather gets warmer, I run the pump more often just to make sure everything circulates well.

What helped me the most was figuring out why the algae kept coming back, rather than just treating it each time. In my case, it turned out to be a couple of small things that I didn’t pay attention to at first.

For both the pool and spa, I make sure the chlorine level doesn’t dip too low between tests. Even a day or two of low chlorine in warm weather is enough for algae to get a head start. I also started brushing the pool and spa more regularly, especially the little corners and steps. It’s surprising how much algae hides in spots you don’t really look at.

One more thing that made a big difference: I clean or backwash my filter right after doing a shock. Once the dead algae gets trapped in the filter, it clogs quickly and the water stops clearing properly. I used to skip that part and the algae would return in a week.

If it still keeps coming back, it might be worth checking for circulation “dead spots” or even just running the pump longer during hotter weeks. A few tweaks like that made my pool and spa much easier to keep clear.

Had something like this last summer after a bunch of rain. For me the biggest thing was just staying on top of scrubbing before throwing more chemicals at it. Once I did that it stopped getting ahead of me. I switched to an AquaDoc Algaecide instead of the generic brands I'd been using from the big box store and it worked a lot better. I just stuck to the weekly maintenance dose and haven't seen any green since. You gotta get your pH right no matter what though.
