Enjoy or a Chaos!!

Honestly, I think it's a mix of both! Opening and closing the pool feels like a mini workout session with all the covers and cleaning, but at the same time, there’s something oddly satisfying about seeing it all set up and ready for the season. Anyone have a foolproof method to make the process less chaotic?

Does anyone actually enjoy opening or closing their pool or is it just controlled chaos for everyone?
I wouldn’t say I enjoy opening or closing the pool, but I’ve kind of made peace with it. Opening is at least a little exciting, getting things cleaned up, hearing the pump kick on, and thinking about the first swim of the season. That said, pulling off the cover and finding a surprise algae party is never fun.

Closing is more of a grind. Between lowering the water, blowing out the lines, and wrestling with the winter cover which never folds the same way twice, it’s not exactly relaxing. I’ve learned to keep all my supplies in one spot and jot down a few notes each year, what worked, what didn’t and that’s saved me a lot of stress.

So no, I wouldn’t call it enjoyable, but with some prep and low expectations, it’s not total chaos either.

Honestly, “controlled chaos” is probably the most accurate way to describe it. I’ve been opening and closing my pool for years, and even with a checklist, something always throws a wrench in the plan.

Opening feels exciting at first, until you pull the cover off and see swampy water, mystery debris, or realize the pump isn’t priming right. Then come the runs to the store for shock, skimmer parts, or test kits you swore you had last season.

Closing’s no easier. Trying to time it right before the weather turns, making sure the lines are blown out properly, the water level’s just right, and the cover actually stays put? It’s like wrestling a giant tarp in the wind.

Some people have it down to a smooth process, but for most of us, there’s always a hiccup or two. You just learn to laugh at it and accept that pool ownership comes with a little chaos twice a year.

I think it’s safe to say it’s mostly controlled chaos for everyone! I wouldn’t say I enjoy it, but I do like the satisfaction of getting everything ready for the season. There’s something about having the pool cleaned, balanced, and ready to go that feels good. The process itself though, dealing with debris, balancing chemicals, and figuring out where everything went, is definitely more stressful than fun.

I’ve found it gets a little easier each year as you get more familiar with the routine, but I don’t think anyone actually enjoys it. Maybe just the relief once it’s done and you can finally relax by the pool!

I think it’d be fun to make your own little ritual for opening and closing the pool. Maybe it could become your favorite part of the season! Just don’t let the pool become the place to discover weird stuff when you open it next

Controlled chaos is the perfect description 😂

I don’t think I enjoy it, but I’ve learned to tolerate it. Opening day always starts with optimism and ends with at least one “how did this even happen?” moment. That said, there is something satisfying about seeing clear water again and hearing everything fire up properly.

Opening feels like hopeful chaos, excitement mixed with surprise debris and at least one trip to the pool store. Closing is more like grumpy chaos. Less excitement, more “why is this cover suddenly twice as heavy and fighting me?”

What helped me was accepting that it’s never going to be smooth. Once I stopped aiming for perfection and just aimed for “good enough and done,” it got way less stressful. Music on, checklist nearby, low expectations… and suddenly it’s manageable.

So yeah, not enjoyable, but not total misery either. Just part of the pool-owner rite of passage, twice a year.
